Alba hated when men tried to teach her things. But no one had ever held her hands the way Karol had that night on the ice, loosening his grip just enough when she was ready for it and tightening it again when she wobbled, lifting her up with a gentle smile when she crashed on her bottom. She knew how it looked–another man guiding another unsteady woman across the frozen pond–but she felt better when she saw what no one else got to see: how hard Karol blushed, and how much he stammered, when he tried to say “you’re welcome.”
