“What do you think?” Mairead asked, dangling the necklace under her chin. 

 

Alba stopped polishing the Trumbulls’ bedframe for a moment and appraised her friend. On principle Alba disapproved of such ostentatious displays of wealth, like the assortment of jewelry Mrs. Trumbull had left strewn across her vanity after returning from the Civic League’s charity ball the night before. But she had to admit the delicate silver necklace would look good on Mairead.

 

“Maybe Michael Hickey will buy me one someday,” Mairead mused, carefully setting the necklace back on the vanity.

 

Alba bit her tongue and went back to polishing.
