Summary: Karol heads out for a day of book-peddling

The woodstove in one corner of the room and the heat from the letterpress’ bucket of molten lead made the printshop almost cozy that morning; Karol would have gladly manned the press all day just to soak up all that warmth. But Mr. Jaronczyk had another idea.

 

“What’s a better Christmas present than a book?” he asked, loading the rickety little cart by the door with copies of the bootleg adventure stories, detective novels, and romances he hadn’t been able to sell throughout the year. 

 

“A raise,” Karol thought to himself, and pushed the cart out onto the frozen street.
