Summary: Karol is stopped in his tracks outside a bakery

The door to the bakery swung open with a jingle and a smiling woman emerged from the shop holding a little paper box. The smell of gingerbread trailed behind her.

 

Karol could hear warm voices inside speaking Polish, and he had half a mind to step through the door and bask in the sights, sounds, and smells of the bakery. Instead he stayed frozen on the sidewalk, his mind buzzing with calculations, attempts to justify a frivolous expense. 

 

He sniffed the air until the scent of gingerbread faded, then pushed his cart further up the street, in search of customers.
