Karol rummaged through the pile of junk on the kitchen table. “Stan, have you seen the newspaper I left here?” 

 

“That Italian one?” Stan tore a hunk of stale bread with his teeth. “Yeah.”

 

“Well…where is it?” Karol asked, careful not to upset his cousin.

 

Stan reached in his back pocket and tossed something at Karol, who heard the sound of liquid sloshing against glass before he caught the small bottle. It was wrapped in a ripped and rumpled copy of the Cronaca Sovversiva–the copy Alba had left on the table the last time she’d visited.

 

“Merry Christmas,” Stan grunted.
