Karol adjusted his grip on Alba’s hips. The rickety chair she was standing on jiggled a little as she stretched to reach one of the branches of the podłaźniczka hanging from Karol’s kitchen ceiling.

 

“It was nice of the Trumbulls to let you borrow some of their old ornaments,” he said, struggling to keep his eyes fixed on the box of colorful globes at his feet…which, of course, didn’t stop him from thinking about the proximity of his face to–

 

“Right,” Alba said, her smile flashing in the reflection of the glass ball she hooked onto a spindly branch. “Borrow.”
