Summary: Mairead is too cold to sleep

Mairead rolled over and wrapped her blankets around herself as tightly as she could. She’d bundled up for bed as usual, but tonight she couldn’t stop shivering. 

 

There were small mounds of snow on the attic floor, sparkling in the moonlight, piled along the walls where the drafts blew in. 

 

Alba was sleeping soundly, Karol’s arm draped over her. Mairead had half a mind to try crawling under their blankets, but she doubted the rickety bed could handle it. Her teeth chattered as she silently repeated her prayer for God to send her someone to keep her warm at night.
