Summary: Mairead reminds Alba of a Sicilian legend

“What’s so funny?” Mairead asked, leaning on her broom. Alba was laughing so hard she could hardly hold her own broom straight.

 

“It’s just…,” Alba began, stifling her giggles, “the broom, the kerchief on your head…you look like La Befana.” 

 

Mairead marched across the floor to swat her friend with her broom, which only made Alba laugh even harder. 

 

“Who the devil is La Befana, anyway?” Mairead asked later, once she was sure Alba’s fit of hysterics had passed.

 

Alba stirred the pot simmering on the stove. “Just an old witch,” she said with a sad smile. “From back home.”
