Summary: Alba and Mairead get a Christmas bonus

Alba and Mairead always got nervous when Mr. Trumbull poked his head into the kitchen–especially when they were lazing around at the table like they were now. Hearing the door open, they both jumped to their feet, straightened their backs, smoothed their aprons–but Mr. Trumbull just smiled magnanimously and held out a small paper bag.

 

“A little Christmas treat,” he announced as Alba took the bag. “For all your hard work.”

 

“They’re all broken,” Alba said, peering into the bag once Mr. Trumbull left the kitchen.

 

Mairead slid one of the cracked canes between her lips. “Still taste good, though.”
