The attic apartment was silent: Mairead was on a date at the Lyceum; Karol was home nursing a cold. Even the Trumbulls were out at another charity ball. Alba was alone.
She watched the golden candlelight flicker in the eave window and felt herself sink more deeply into her bed. Her mind drifted, as it did when she had a few moments to herself–but not to her writing, or the war, or the strikes. To Karol. And as her mind drifted, so did her hands, to the places Karol liked to touch her, and the places she wished he would.
